Messengers
Chasquis counted the knots and strings on quips to relay messages . The road also allowed the emperor at Cuzco to communicate with officials in distance places. Chasquis, or messengers carried the messages from one station to the next. For the Inca government, quips proved to be an effective substitute for written language.
